It could be this year’s biggest holiday trend. No, not some fancy technology gadget, or must-have toy. Rather just a big heart. People all over the country are opening their wallets and their hearts and being dubbed “layaway angels” for their generosity.
And, now, Greenville is home to an angel of it’s own.
On Thursday, the kind strangers dubbed “layaway angels” paid the K-mart account for a woman in Greenville. FOX Carolina was there as the grateful woman picked up her gifts.
“There are no words to describe how I feel right now,” said Amy Garner, whose layaway account was paid. “I will never forget how I felt when I got that phone call.”
Garner said she will use the money she saved on her layaway items to buy presents for the children at the hospital where she works.
On Wednesday, more than 30 generous strangers came in to a K-mart store in Hendersonville, NC, to pay off the layaway accounts for people buying toys and clothes.
Employees at the store said the families that have been helped are overwhelmed with gratitude.
“This is the true meaning,” said Rick Orndorff, manager of the Hendersonville K-mart store. “They just want to know that they are helping families and some kids, and that they’re going to have a special Christmas this year.”
Donors have given more than $400,000 to families who have items on layaway at the K-mart stores nationwide.
